No, not another resolution but a real commitment. Not something that fades away with the waning weeks of February but something that becomes part of who we are. A commitment to make time for a fitness that feeds our body and soul. A commitment to not just make time for fitness but a commitment to build it into the fabric of our days and lives. A commitment to ride to work or a commitment to a wind-down, afterwork walk. A commitment to learn a new sport or re-acquaint with an old one.
It all starts to sound a little less daunting and a little more fun. Now that’s a commitment I can keep.

Happy New Year,
Missy Park, Founder
In July 2009, I decided to make a commitment to my health; since then I’ve lost 30 pounds with only 2 pounds to go for my first weight-loss goal. Over the years, I’ve been fit, biking, running, sailing even teach spinning; I’ve even participated in 3 sprint triathlons, but I was over weight and ready to make some changes! Started eating a cleaner diet, planning weekly menus along with exercise and the weight started coming off! Finished a half-marathon in December and I’m training for a marathon in February! I would say that’s commitment! Ran 16 miles today! It was tough, I didn’t dress quite warm enough, but I was out there making a difference in my life and that’s what counts.
I discovered tennis last year at the age of 49 and became totally hooked! I’m committing to a regular winter exercise regime with my summer tennis game in mind. I’m going to workout on the elliptical trainer, with weights, in the pool, and with a personal trainer occasionally for tennis-specific exercises. My goal? To be able to play three straight sets of tennis, outlast my (often) younger opponents, and not let fatigue be the thing that beats me!
I made a vision board for 2010 so I can look at how far I have come and where I want to go! Here is my story and my triumphs in 2009…

My promises and keys for a wonderful 2010
LOVE – HEALTH – HAPPINESS – BEAUTY – PEACE – JOY
1.Keep a positive attitude in times of stress at work and in daily life situations.
2.Take advantage of the beautiful parks and facilities available to me
3.Maintain my over 25 pound weight loss by working out at least 1 hour 6 times a week , even if it is a long walk around the park – GOALS no assistance tricep dip / perfect samba / run for an hour on the treadmill
4.Continue to bring my meals & snacks to work so I eat healthy by cooking at home
5.Buy organic whenever possible and shop seasonally, and switch out all my pantry items to environmentally friendly versions
6.Put an extra $20 a week extra into our savings so we can have a little extra for much needed vacations
7.Do not keep any snack or pantry items in the apartment that have any artificial ingredients, and incorporate whole grains and healthy alternatives into my baking recipes to create healthier/ low calorie versions of my favorite items
8.Try a new gym class or routine every 20 days –
9. Pay our credit card bills off in 20 months, all left over from our wedding and doctors bills to be dept free
10.Take at least 20 minutes every day to walk away from my desk and get a breath of fresh air
11.Spend time with my family and friends
12.Always remember how far I have come and be thankful for my strong body and health
I have always loved the Title Nine clothes and especially the inspirational models.

My mother passed away from cancer almost 2 years ago. There is a lot of unhealthy overweight people in my family. So I am walking and exersising to be a role model for my children. I feel good after exersising and find I am not as depressed either. I have had a bilateral mast. Need I say more?
I haven’t “worked out” in years! I am “in training” looking forward to accomplishing a new goal every year. This year is a 1/2 marathon in May. I’m also blessed to be on a team with tough, smart, athletic, competitive and highly motivated women whom are also my friends. This team (together everyone accomplishes more) inspires me on a daily basis!
I have a group of friends that I run and bike with. It is easier to keep the commitment when you know someone is there waiting on you to show up.
My commitment to fitness actually began five months ago. After spending a decade as a couch potato, I started training on a treadmill…verrrryyyy slowly. Then in 10/09, I committed to finish the Cowtown Half Marathon-pretty ambitious, but I really thought I was ready. I wasn’t, but I finished…limped across the finish line. But that finish inspired me to hit the gym almost every day since then, gradually adding new machines like the elliptical, and adding weight training on alternate days. I feel wonderful, have dropped a dress size, and am looking forward to this year’s Cowtown Half..I’d like to cut an hour off my finish time, since I am transitioning from racewalking to running. Nobody needs to nag me to hit the gym any more…I’m usually the first one there!
I have been a hiker, biker, and yogini for 20 years – never avid but dipping in here and there as time permits and always carrying some extra cushioning! I began teaching Music Together almost 10 years ago. It is an early childhood music & movement program and requires LOTS of energy – jumping, dancing & wiggling with children and their grownups.
A year ago I got my White Belt in Nia and for the first time a commitment to a fitness program was not something to struggle with, but something that brought me joy and peace as well as a level of fitness that I have never achieved before. Nia is a practice that is all about seeking the joy in your movement. A commitment to nurturing your body and soul and mind. A commitment to finding ease in every movement.
I am blessed to have this commitment in my life!
As a full-time fitness professional my greatest challenge is actually finding that 60 minutes 5 to 6 days per week to do my own exercise program. Since I teach anywhere from 2 to 3 exercise classes per day, and several personal training sessions per day, where is that time for my own concentrated workout effort to actually be geared towards improving my own health & wellness. For 2010, I am putting it on my calendar, something that I have always advocated my clients to do. Making working out (whether it is playing tennis, hiking, spinning, cycling, strength training or walking) a high priority appointment everyday.
This is a case where the teacher is taught by the students.
Kick breast cancer to the curb in 2008-2009 and sign up for Ironman Wisconsin 2010. That is it in a nutshell 🙂
