I have been coaching girls basketball for over 15 years. I am a mom of five, an athlete, I just ran my tenth marathon in November. Here were some early morning thoughts…about basketball, and dishes after listening to a Buddhist monk.
No goal, no objective, no attachment to outcome being.
When you wash the dishes, your aim is not to have clean dishes. You simply wash the dishes to feel the warmth of the water, the smell of the soap, the Sunday of the running water, the sight of the bubbles. You wash the dishes simply to wash the dishes. Serving the greater good in the universe comes about as a matter of consequence, not as a stated aim, or goal, or attachment to that aim or goal.
Or……when playing basketball – You play basketball to play basketball. Not to win. Not to be the high scorer. Numbers, points, scores and winning is not the aim. The joy of playing is the aim. Not playing to win, or score a 1000 points. You play to play.
Joy. No outcome.
Now I tell my girls on the basketball team – “You play to play. You play for joy.” Our motto now – plat to play.
So, my caption: “Play to play”
