Working Out
Every Thanksgiving morning since I was pregnant with my oldest son (now 11) I have run the 5K Trunk Trot in downtown Minneapolis, MN to help raise money for local food shelves. This year my 11 and 9-yr-old sons will run it with me for the first time 🙂
Every Thanksgiving since 1985, I’ve done my own personal Turkey Trot. With or without family, friends, etc. Run anywhere from 3 to 6 miles, depending on how the season is going. The year I was 8 months pregnant I just walked, but I went. Big group that year. I usually get up early, get the stuffing made and turkey in the oven and then I go run. Then come back and am ready for the rest of the day, the cooking and the company.
I injured my foot badly last fall, and the recovery has been long and difficult. This is my second Thanksgiving not being able to run (or even walk!), and I have developed a new habit of eating my stress instead of running it off! I appreciate any suggestions of how to make it through this holiday season without adding to the pounds I put on last year!
This is going to be our 5th Annual Turkey Trot Run – Here in Hartford, WI
We all meet at our state park and run the trails for a 4-5 mile run at 9:30 Thanksgiving morning.
Dogs are definently welcome to run with us – Last year we had 12 people and
6 dogs – hoping for more this year –
What a great way to start out the morning and get your dog out for a run.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
For 9 years now our family tradition has been to participate in the local Turkey Trot in the morning to start the festivities. It is only a 5k but we love it and can do it together as a family, 4 boys (ages 9,6,2 and 4mos), jog strollers and all. It’s almost always in the 20’s (Colorado), usually snowy but always a blast! Happy Thanksgiving!
I always go for a run alone or with a friend. Being in New Hampshire it’s sometimes in fresh snow and sometimes in shorts. This year, a friend has organized an informal turkey trot, 6 hilly miles around our loop (It’s called the Dogford Loop because the original farmers along it all had a dog and a ford.) Some people are going to walk and some will run. We’ll all meet afterwards on the town green, have some tea or cider, then be gone to our kitchens.
When my daughter was in high school she started running the Pequot Runner’s Thanksgiving Day race in Stratford, Ct. While she was in college I took up running and two years ago began running this race with her. This year I will continue the tradition on my own, as she is stationed in Japan with the Navy, and I will dedicate my run to her and all our armed forces.
My husband and I are running in the Buffalo YMCA Turkey Trot-it is one of the oldest road races in the country. It will be the 114th annual! I have only been running in it for the past 5-6 years but I love it! Less guilt at the Thanksgiving table!
In Philly, all the rowers do a Thanksgiving morning Turkey Trot that starts on boathouse row. It’s a 5 5/8 mile run over hilly terrain that takes you through historic Fairmount park. Runners get prizes afterward in order of their finish time.
My dad proposed to my mom on Thanksgiving day when they were taking their morning run. It then became a tradition every year for them to renew their vows on their run that morning. Now that my sister and I have gotten into running, we join them, so that we can celebrate being a family together that day (although we do step aside for a moment or two to allow some vow-renewing privacy).
