Working Out
We live in East Burke, Vermont, we will get up early, join a bunch of our running friends and run a 5k Turkey Trot in Barton, Vermont at 9:00 a.m. about 20 miles from home. The proceeds of the Trot go to the 98 Mile Foundation which helps with expenses for cystic fibrosis related transplants. My family and I will then drive to Barre, Vermont, another 35 miles and have family Thanksgiving Dinner at my Aunti’s house. We have been doing this for years, the Turkey Trot has just been thrown into the plan in the last 3 years. We run to eat!
My little sister Audrey won the Turkey Trot in our small town every year. Once she got a reputation for this, most kids didn’t even wish to compete. Being the competitive spirit that she is, she had a tried and true strategy for winning it every time: brains and brawn. She’s by far the fastest person I know, but she would hold back and let everyone else think they were winning, then blast past everyone to win the bird! I don’t think that they have a division in that race for 28-year-olds, but three kids later and much on her plate(no Thanksgiving pun intended) Audrey still smokes em’ at marathons and every race she has the opportunity to run. She’s amazing!
My husband, son and I participate in the Drumstick Dash which is a 5K run/walk that benefits our local rescue mission. Over 5,000 people participated last year so it’s a great fundraiser! Move your feet so others can eat is the slogan.
One Thanksgiving eve, I talked my brother-n-law into waking up early with me on Thanksgiving morning to hike Squaw Peak Mtn; 1.2 miles up! Despite his reluctance, he did! That was back in 1995… since that day, our 2-man team has grown to over 30ppl; friends, family, neighbors and even strangers join us (we even make our own shirts)! This year will mark our 14th Annual Turkey Trot… like we say, “You have to be a turkey to trot like this”!
Sacramento is host to a very large Thanksgiving Day “Run to Feed the Hungry” event. For the past 5 years I’ve run the 10K with a group of friends along with 24,000 other runners and walkers. It’s a great way to start the morning knowing that you are helping so many less fortunate souls.
For years, my good friend and I have had a tradition of hiking in the beautiful foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains near San Francisco. Every Thanksgiving for about 10 years, we’ve head out in the early morning to enjoy the outdoors, a nice brisk hike, and ready our bodies for the insane amounts of food coming our way. The hike gets our hearts pumping and our energy levels up, so we can help out with the cooking!
For 10 of the last 13 years I’ve run the Philadelphia Marathon the Sunday before Thanksgiving. During my first, in 1997, a spectator shouted, “No guilt this Thanksgiving!” Although I never overindulge just because I’ve done the race, I’ve nevertheless thought of this sentiment each year.
The race is my own personal Thanksgiving tradition and the 3 times I’ve missed it, due to pregnancies, I’ve really missed doing it. I’m looking forward to it this weekend!
I actually love to go to a mid-morning yoga class before sitting down for the big feast.
for the past 4 years, my husband & I have started Thanksgiving Day with a Turkey Trot race in either Oklahoma City (where we live) or Orlando (where my family lives). 2 years ago in OKC, the temp was 27 with 25 MPH winds. We decided the only people racing that day were those with family in town and really needed to escape. Should be much more pleasant this year!
We gather up as many folks as we can and head over to the local park for a big ol’ game of kickball!
