While my participation in local races varies around Thanksgiving (this year I’m doing a marathon the Saturday following) I always go for a Turkey Day run in the morning while the bird is in the oven. It gives me energy to get through the hectic day and allows me a small piece of guiltless apple pie!
We have our feast around 2. We finish up, clear the dishes and go for a long walk in the Stanford foothills and then, as the sun takes a rest, we return home for pie and tea. This year there will be 17 of us. Our walk will be a parade! Much for which to be grateful.
I always run the 5K Turkey Trot Race on Thanksgiving morning in Eureka’s Old Town. I usually (all years but one) come in first of my division, which wins me a Marie Callendar’s pie. It’s usually coconut cream though, because the winners of the younger divisions get to pick their pies first! It’s okay. I’ve learned to like coconut cream 🙂
My husband, mother, father and I all run a local 5K Thanksgiving morning call the Turkeyman Trot. I love getting bundled up and joining all of the runners on such a festive morning. It’s an awesome buzz before eating too much food.
Although, the first year I ran the race it was -10 below with a windchill of -20 – I made it to the end without frost bite!!
I like to take our dog for a really long run right when the sun comes up. The views and the fresh air can’t be beat. That run gives me the energy to make it through Thanksgiving dinner.
I run the local Tiger Turkey Chase 5 Miler and never feel guilty about Thanksgiving dinner.
We usually head up to the inlaws house early, and take the kids on a long hike. The house is at the base of a large hill, the top of which is an entrance to a 6,117 acre park. Living in California usually affords us with great weather at Thanksgiving. Yet another thing for which to be grateful. It is a fun family activity, which results in a rather hungry bunch. A good way to start the day. It usually ends with the inlaws babysitting, while my husband and I enjoy a good film. No complaints here.
My friend, who owns Take It Outside Fitness (in Portland, Oregon) and I are organizing our own Thanksgiving morning Tabor Turkey Trot on Mt. Tabor. Mt. Tabor is one of two volcanoes within a city limits in the USA and we’re gonna run all over it!
Our yoga Studio Mark Blanchard’s in Kansas City does an Eight O’clock practice. It’s great to see everyone and sweat all the kinks out before the family comes over. A little sliced turkey from the deli for the meat eaters and lots of veggies and it’s a really great day!!
My husband and I, along with many friends, have spent many Thanksgivings over the past 25 years at the Yellowstone Ski Festival in West Yellowstone, Montana. The nordic skiing there is generally the earliest and best track skiing anywhere in the country. Several days of cross country skiing and sharing beautiful meals cooked in our rented condos or warmed up in hotel microwaves, make for a fun and healthy Thanksgiving week.
