Working Out

I love to hit the trails on my mountain bike or take my newfie for a hike/squirrel chase before dinner. Then it’s gather with friends to enjoy great food, football, and a nap!
Well, its more like a “scrum” than a “trot,” but our town’s local tradition is to gather at the local high school and warm up with a game of touch rugby. Then we proceed to get down to business with the time-honored tradition of flag football. It is a great way to get some fresh air and burn off some calories before the gorge. You never know what the weather is going to be like and in years when we have a lot of snow, it makes the game pretty entertaining! I live in a very small mountain town on the border of Yellowstone National Park. Sharing good times with neighbors is important and necessary when trying to fend off the isolation of winter when most businesses and facilities are closed for the season.
Every Thanksgiving morning our family participates in the local Run for the Hungry Turkey Trot. For the last ten years we have run, walked, pushed strollers and held hands every Thanksgiving morning with our family, friends and neighbors. Two years ago I was sad to miss the tradition but I was thankful for my last chemotherapy four days before! I hope to continue this tradition for many years! It is a great way to start the day of eating and drinking and being thankful we are alive!
Thanksgiving in s spiritual holiday for me, time toreally think about how lucky i am.
As a vegetarian it is difficult to spend this holiday with people, as a big dead bird ( or pig) in the middle of the table is not my thing.
So, i hike, go off into the mountains, breathe fresh cool air, take in the beauty and glory and celebrate how lucky i am for so many many things.
THen, come back to be with friends, for dessert , after the bird has been eaten ( and put away) 🙂
Before spending most of the day cooking my two running partners and I go out to the ranch lands before the sun comes up and do a 10-mile dawn run. Watching the sun rise on Mauna Kea is more than inspiring. After a day of cooking, friends, food and games my family goes into town for out Thanksgiving Day movie date.
I am a biology professor at a community college in rural New Jersey. Our Health and Exercise Science Department organizes a campus turkey trot every year. The course is 2 miles and includes hills, gravel, grass and sometimes wooded paths. Each participant predicts their time without knowing the exact course all watches and cell phones are turned in at the start of the race and the person with the closest finish time to their predicted time wins a turkey. The rest of us win the joy of a nice walk/run in the Fall weather with friends and students.
On Thanksgiving morning, my sisters, dad, brothers-in-law, dog, and I all go for a long run together early in the morning. We have a great time, catching up on news, encouraging the slow-pokes, scolding those who go out too fast, and preparing ourselves for the pie-related calorie-fest that is about to ensue! It also gives the non-runners some space in the kitchen to actually get the cooking done, making it a tradition that everyone looks forward to.
This year we’re creating out own turkey trot!
Because half of my immediate family lives overseas and the other half in the U.S. we find a good Thanksgiving location that’s “close” to everyone and this year it’s in Freeport, Maine. There aren’t any local turkey trots this year so we’re creating our own – something that I think will become tradition.
And while we’re all promising to support each other and “run together”, I know that towards the end of our 5K our competitive sides are going to kick in – I can’t wait!
Traditionally I run the Philadelphia Marathon the sunday before Thanksgiving. After I run my husband and I get together with family to celebrate Thanksgiving! We have a huge feast and get together with family and extended family.
I never thought I would run a Marathon and now I have run 4 marathons and hope to qualify for Boston this year! Distance running is such a challenge to not only finish the distance but to better my time each race.
With Sport Induced Asthma and Anemia my body is challenged on many different levels. I have learned to overcome the pain in many ways and it has lead me to successfully finish and PR all my road races and triathlons!
Celebrate Life!
Stephanie
Third year running the Turkey Trot in downtown Detroit. Improved my time by nearly 5 minutes last year, looking for a top 10 finish this year!
