My Blue Wall
I have these darling children, 3 boys and 1 girl too.
They asked me why my bedroom wall is painted ocean blue.
I told them that I want to be reminded of the sea,
The California coast where I was born and meant to be.
I told them how I long to surf and frolic on the beach.
They quickly rolled their eyes as if that dream was out of reach.
Since then I have lost 30 pounds and I intend to prove,
That like the moms of Title Nine, I will get back my groove.
I was always terrified of who I was or what I wanted to be. I failed out of college the first time and a lack of money and courage, kept me from going back. Now I’m almost 40 and finally going for my BA with students half my age. I wanted to prove to myself, not others, that I am important and that I can still be fearless. To prove to myself that no matter how old I am, that good things happen, adventure can still grab me and encourage to keep kicking like in the ass.
As I redeployed from Afghanistan recently, I wanted to learn how to surf. I love the outdoors from hiking to kayaking to now having a dream of learning to surf. Not only is it a dream of mine, but also wounded warriors. I have had the opportunity to work with wounded warriors from Iraq and Afghanistan and what better opportunity than to be able to take them out to ride the waves. I rode alongside a double amputee to complete a 110 mile bike ride, and with this awesome surfboard, just imagine what else they could accomplish. Thanks T9!
Boards in general, are flat and boring. Like cutting boards, particle board, and board meetings. It’s kind of like flat soda. But what about the boards that add fizz to life? Like a clean chalkboard ready for anything, like checkerboard patterns, like snowboards making first tracks! I want to take this surfboard to those board meetings. To use it for art, to take it down the mountain, even use it in a game of shuffle board! Why? Why not! Life should have more fizz!
I finally learned to body-surf when I was in my 40s; now, after 15 years of looking at the beach from the sandy side, I’m ready to go to the next step. I’ve adventured with my kids and grandkids in Australia, Montreal, California, Washington, and Utah. When my far-flung family members come to visit next time, I’d like to take them to one of our beautiful West Coast beaches—and then go surfing with them, not just watch from the shore while they have all the fun. (And of course I’d share!)
A few summers ago I decided to try surfing. I spent my early years growing up boogie boarding in Califonia, but had never tried surfing… what my brother would term “the only way to experience the wave”. Besides my neice could do it…so why not me?! My brothers idea of teaching is learn by doing..” out ya go sis and have at it”…only telling me a few pointers! Guess I should have done research first and chosen a LONGER board instead of the SHORT one! This board would be for you Jia, and I will just boogie!
I would love to win this board in order to complete a fantasy. Several years ago, when I was a newlywed and before I was a mom, I took surf lessons. I tried for weeks to get up on the board, a huge, thick, learner longboard that left me bruised and sore for days. My goal was to see the look on my husband’s face when I stood up for the first time, as far as he knew, without ever having surfed before. I finally got up once in a lesson, but I still haven’t had a chance to see the look on my (surfer) husband’s face when I stand up for the first time. I want to set a god example for my daughter, not giving up on my dreams and continuing to stay fit. Having my own board would be a great chance to get more practice and a great visual reminder, every day – to never give up on my dreams.
Ok so I live in Utah. No Ocean here 🙁 I love the ocean with all my heart, I am a water girl. How do I survive in this dry state? Lakes and our Mastercraft boat. Why do I love this surfboard, other than it is absolutely the cutest thing?
I get to surf behing our boat!! We fill the tanks in the boat crank up the tunes and get busy behind the boat, surfing! Don’t think for one second when I head to the ocean I wouldn’t take my new board with me.
In 2006, I moved to St. Joseph, Michigan which sits on the coast of Lake Michigan. We have beautiful sunsets and I hear we have great waves in the late fall. So far, I haven’t participated. But, over the past several months I lost 35 pounds and gained a new attitude! I am ready to take on new challenges and new adventures in my life. It would be such a thrill to slip into a wet suit and catch a wave for the first time. Quite a chilling experience 🙂
Memories of going to Dana Point watching the surfers at sunset with Dad, eying the swells, guessing which one they would pick, once the surfer was paddling the excitement began. Imagining riding the wave, which foot was forward? If he crashed we were on pins and needles until we saw his head. Yes “his head”, this was when there was no jetty and very few female surfers. I dreamed of being a “surfer chick”. – now at 40 and it is time to surf, for me, for women with dreams and for the memory of sunsets with my father!
