One Kook’s Epic Quest for a Quiver: According to Matt Warsaw’s Encyclopedia for Surfers, a quiver is a surfer’s arsenal of surfboards. Like a soldier’s artillery in battle, a surfer’s quiver is made up of a variety of boards suited to the range of liquid conditions that roll her way. While pro surfers need a well-stocked quiver to help them surf in exotic locations and various wave breaks, this teacher turned surf-addict from Massachusetts seeks to build her first quiver so that she may ride any wave the Northeast swell throws at her. Please help this kook begin her quest!
There are a few things in lift that brave people do. Bungy jumping, sky diving and yes, surfing. They all have a little bit of danger and excitment. The bravest I’ve come to surfing is balance training on my bongo board. I’m a chicken, but my older brother has done all of these things. I wonder sometimes if he’s brave or just crazy! But I think it’s time now that I get over my fears and try out these things whether I get hurt or not. I’m not getting and younger!! And you only live once!!!
What a beautiful vibrant board! I live in landlocked wonderful Montana but my eyes and soul crave this board. It whispers promises of opportunities and dreams yet to come. It has such spirit. I do not “deserve” this board but she lifted my heart and made me smile when I saw her. I hope she does the same for all who see her.
Born and raised in the wilds of rainy Southeast Alaska, I always longed to live where palm trees sway in warm breezes and the ocean beckons affectionately. At age 30 I finally pushed aside my doubts and moved, on a whim, to San Diego, where I’ve made a fabulous life for myself! Right after I moved here, I took a weekend course at SurfDiva to fulfill my dream of being a CaliSurferGirl! Well… the ocean kicked my butt, ever-so-tenderly, and I’ve yet to properly ride the waves. Since then, I’ve lost 40 pounds and participate in a 5 days a week bootcamp that has made me stronger and more confident than I’ve ever been. Next month I’m starting a several-weekends course of surfing lessons and with those and this fire in my belly, I plan to step onto my Carve Designs board, conquer my inhibitions and become a hanging-ten hottie!
I want to stand up on that surfboard and have the feeling that I see when I watch other people catch a wave, and even on your catalog pages. It looks absolutely invigorating and life inspiring. I imagine that standing up for the first time would make a person feel like nothing else that I can think of. I live in Cape May, NJ, a beach town..and I need to know the feeling!!!! Thanks for the inspiration.
What I wouldn’t do with this big, big blue
Board of a ride so sweet and true
I’d take that board in my land-locked state
Take it to the top and I’d navigate
Take it to the top and ride it down
Down a snowy mountain to the center of town
Turn it on a dime and wink my eye
Everyone would see it and, oh, they’d sigh
Everyone asks, “Where’d you get that ride?”
“Where you gonna take it when there ain’t no tide?”
“No tide needed for me,” I’d say.
“I’m gonna carve my own true way.”
Two years ago, my godfather, who lives in Hawaii, came to visit for a few weeks. It was the middle of October and he decided to teach me and my brother how to surf. I had so much fun and I want to continue surfing. The only problem is I dont have a board. If I won this I could start surfing again and my godfather would be really proud of me. Also my parents said that if I won they would take me to Hawaii to visit him and I could finally be able to surf actual waves.
I am writing in the hopes that I could give this board to my daughter, who no doubt has written in also. Her name is Rae. She has been plagued with illness, likely MS, for almost two years now.
Her biggest luxury is water, bonus if she had a surfboard. But upon getting sick, she decided to devote her life to charity work and is starting a nonprofit and who knows when she will set aside some money for HERSELF to enjoy!
So, maybe you can help. Perhaps you’d be willing to give, to the giver.
Live with passion. Passion for the ocean motivated me to get my PhD in marine science, which is now moving me to Santa Cruz for a post doc. I grew up in Indiana, but have always had a fascination for the marine realm and protecting this natural wonder (and I love sea turtles). My research focus is investigating pollutants in coastal ecosystems and how they are impacting these delicate environments. I am excited to move to the west coast where I can learn to surf. It will be another adventure to continue living my life with passion.
I”m 55 and 15 years clean & sober. One of the things that has kept me that way is being active. I’ve always been into outrigger canoing but when I got C&S I had to stay busy. At 40 I started getting more active. I’ve done 2 Queen Liliuokalani 18 mile iron outrigger rigger races and at 50 I did the Na Wahine O ke Kai 40 mile race w/water changes. I ride a harley and now have my grandkids paddling. I did a 1/2 marathon a couple of years ago and Muddy Buddy twice. I am always looking for something to do! I would love to learn to surf and take the kids along to learn too. I want them to know that there is always something better to do with their lives. I am so fortunate and with this board I could share my fortune. Come on kids, give an old broad another toy to share! The purpose of life is to be happy and of service to others.
