I’m a 34 year old wife, mother, Library Media Specialist, daughter, sister, sports enthusiast, and lover of the outdoors. I’m good at many things, but not great at any. I’m game to try almost anything once and would love to try my hand at surfing one day. Winning this surf board will allow me to see what I’m made of in the water. If I win this surfboard, I promise that I will use it to catch and ride a wave. Perhaps this is my hidden greatness! Thanks for helping me achieve my dream.
We live in Charleston, S.C., about 15 minutes from the beach, where we spend a lot of time. I have a four year old daughter named Ella, who I thought I taught could do anything. I exercise almost every day, I rollerblade, bike ride, kayak, along with anything else I can fit in. The first time I knew I was showing her that we girls can do anything was when at a festival she climbed the tall climbing wall with her prairie skirt and red ballet shoes on. And then, this past week we were at the beach and there was a girl surfing. I showed her to Ella because this surfer (girl) was awesome, and she said to me “I didn’t know girls could do that”. I saw this contest a few days later and thought, maybe she just needs to see me to show her, and then we can do it together.
I am not a thrill-seeker, and I’m terrible at sports. But I adore the ocean. Every since my parents first took me to Florida when I was four, this love affair has only grown. I’ve been wearing surfing gear since grade school in hopes that one day I would learn how to surf. Do you know how funny it looks to wear surfing gear in Illinois? For me, it helps keep my dream alive. My motto, “This is the year I’m going to do it!” is this year. Wouldn’t this surfboard would look great with my hibiscus-printed luggage? š
I think I should be winning a new surfboard!! I am a mother of two wonderful boys (14 & 8) As my experience with motherhood, I encourage my children to always give back to the world. I have taught my children to be involved in many charities. One in particular and by far their favorite is a toy giving foundation were they package up toys and things kids need and give them to orphanages in africa. They have come to understand that they have so much and they only way to appreciate that is to give it away. I have showed them that in tough times …it helps you to give more. I was faced with life difficulties and decided to train with leukemia society and raised enough money for a sick local girl and gave it my all and ran 26.2 miles with my kids to cheer me on…i told them ..dont feel sorry for yourself ..get out there and run..My youngest son just donated 12 inches of his hair to Locks of Love and they have both donated their birthday money to buy materials to purchase hospital beds in clinics in west africa. I had purchased name plates and sent them over as well so the clinic took pictures of it and they are proud. This surf board would give my children and myself some play time in a nearby body of water where the discussions of more ways to give come up. I always try to set a good example. We are lacing up our sneakers at this moment to warm up for a race tomorrow morning ,,,for mother’s day we are running a race in memory of someone local that has lost their battle to cancer and I want to teach my children to give …if not with money ..give it your heart and soul…and a little bit of rubber off the old sneakers…we run…because you never know what the conversation brings in play time.
On March 25th 2009, my sister Stephanie and I were 10 minutes into our weekly mountain bike ridding we do together. We ride the Fullerton loop to stay in shape for the Muddy Buddy run/ride we also do every year. As we were crossing one of the major intersections that connects the trail, I was stuck by a vehicle that did not stop for the pedestrian cross signal. My sister watch in horror as I was flung into the air and landed on the pavement. She was my hero that day. She always takes her cell phone with her on our rides and called 911. As I laid there in pain with my left three fingers severly dislocated and unable to move my left hip, she was calm and reasuring. I was taken to the trama center at UCI Irvine were I sustained a fracured pelvis in 3 places requireing sugery. I was in the Hospital for 9 days. My sister stayed with me every night making sure I was comfortable. She washed my hair, wipe and cleaned in places I don’t want to mention and most of all kept my spirits up. I know it was hard on her to see her big sister in pain. My sister means the world to me. She like me has a love for the outdoors. We do everything together and I would love to see her surfing on this incredible board. I want to show her how much I love and appreciate everything she has done for me by letting everyone know at T9 that my sister is the greatest sister and best friend in the world. I still have a lot of rehabing left to go, but I will be on the trails again soon with my best friend. Thanks again Catherine Sobieski
On June 30 I complete 7 years of surgical training. To survive the long process, I became the master of self-denial, foregoing hobbies and sports that brought me joy. I sold my surfboard so it would not tempt me away from my studies. The irony is I live at the beach. With weeks to go in my training I can sense freedom. I yearn for a new life, envisioning mind, body and spiritual balance. Iām eager to surf again for exercise and mental renewal. The surf board would be the best graduation present to the new, balanced me.
I’d love to have something nice to ride sweet waves with when I return on mid-tour leave from Afghanistan! Can’t think of a better way to relax after keeping my countrywomen and men safe overseas.
Surfing is like riding on the waves of life
And you have to make sure they don’t knock you over.
You have to learn how to ride these waves
And how to use them to your advantage.
You have to learn how to balance yourself
So you cannot be tipped over by anyone.
You must learn to appreciate to appreciate what you are given
And use it to your full advantage.
My name is MaryRita. My family and I live in Cape Cod. The one thing i’ve always wanted to do is surf. Sadly, i’m getting too old, but I do have some time left! If I win this surf board, I will have acheived my final goal in life. Two segerys in the last two years has been hard, but I prove that 55 isn’t old yet! Currently, we don’t have enough money to pay for a surfboard, so I would be very grateful if I won. š
Thanks!
My goal before I turned 30 was to learn to surf. I live on Lake Superior, so this was no small task. Instead of learning how to surf, I was on shore watching the surfers with my belly big. A few months later I had a baby girl. Now that she just turned 1, I am on again on a mission to learn how to surf. It would be sweet to show my little girl that her Mom is a Lake Superior surfer chick.
