In 2003 I had the courage to get a divorce and become the single mother of 2 teenage boys. As a gift to myslf, I fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting Costa Rica. I was there for 9 days by myself, and while I missed my boys terribly, I was truly empowered by some of the things I experienced. One day, I walked down a road to the surfer hangout and found someone to give me a surfing lesson. I was having a blast, learning to surf in the Caribbean, however never made it to standing up on the board. My instructor felt bad that I never stood, but I assured him it was all good – it was a beautiful day and I was having a great time. I would love the opportunity to win this surfboard and continue my lessons where I left off.
My mother, a wonderful hardworking single mom, died a number of years ago at the age of 63. Her greatest advise in her passing was to live life, work hard and don’t wait to do the things you want to do. Seems fairly simple but life can be short. She always wanted to go to Hawaii and never had the opportunity. On June 20th my family and I are heading to Hawaii to ride a wave or two in her honor. Carpe diem
This is going to sound very strange but here goes…
If I had this board it would be a sign of strength and hope to me. I did a minimal amount of surfing as a teen because the boys were surfing. It remained in the back of my mind to surf again one day but I never tried it again until… a boy.
We started dating last June, a week after my 37th birthday. He got me back in the water on his surf board. It was great. We went to Costa Rica in January and I was able to surf again. (his board) In February he said, “He didn’t want to be in a relationship.”
Now, no boy and no board, and would you believe we are sharing a shore house this summer. I could buy a board but somehow having this one would make me think I belonged back in the water on my own.
Anyway if all that isn’t enough, June 1st is my 38th Birthday and blue is my favorite color.
Wow..that is one cool board! Just like the clothes in your catalog!! My husband is a firefighter and one very cool guy..he surf Kayaks..he is a white water raft guide..he loves to bike, hike etc..you get what I mean. Well I can tag along on the bike, and hiking (not overnite) and I do love to paddle my kayak..but Surf!! wow that would be the ticket!! I would love to grab that bull by the horns and hit the water! I am 54 and willing to give it a try. I havent seen him on one so maybe I could just make this happen with your help! I live in the “Ocean State” and when summer comes this is one happening place at the beach!! Narragansett here I come!
My eight year old daughter just began to learn to surf this year. My husband is a lifelong surfer and is slowly teaching her the old school tandem surfing made famous in those old “Gidget” movies. They have this massive 12′ board which they ride together at Carmel beach (California). They make it look easy. A couple of weekends ago they brought me with them to watch. When they came in I said, “Wow, that board is big enough even for me, maybe I will learn to surf too.” My daughter laughed and said, “Mom, your a grown-up, your too old to learn to surf.” So, you can see, even at 44 I still have a lot to prove.

My husband’s a surfer; born in Hawaii
When I tried his board; it made us both cry-ii
It was too big and I was too clumsy
My sons laughed and said try again mumsy
I did and got pounded right into the reef
I felt scared and embarrased and full of grief
With my own board sized right, I will conquer my fear
I will learn to surf Pipe by the end of the year!
With Slater and Irons and Hobgood and Laird
Just give me the board and I’ll be prepared!!
In my heart, I’ve always known that I was a Gidget. I spent more time in the water growing up than on land. And all I ever wanted to do was surf. Trouble was, much like Gidget, I could never afford a board. My parents couldn’t either. I used to try and stand up on my boogie board – riding it all the way into the shore. It never worked very well. It would be a life long dream to really be able to surf, especially on a beautiful, custom made board. I could even use it to teach other people to surf, my friends have always wanted to learn…
It would mean the world to me to be able to fulfill my life long Gidget dream. And trust me – I’d wear that beautiful board out!
No one DESERVES to win. We only deserve what we EARN. I tell my daughter this every time she wants the soccer ball the opposing team has taken. I tell her that every time she just “has to have” that next thing in the store window. “You want it? You gotta EARN it.” She sees me run marathons for worthy causes. She sees me in school, taking care of the hearth and home. My goal is to make her a strong woman, and for her brothers to see strong women in their lives. We’re moving to Fort Bragg with the Army, driving distance to the beach. Give us the use of this surf board and we will EARN it. We’ll tackle the waves, gaining physical strength and the knowledge that when you’re willing to work and sweat, what you earn is a bigger piece of yourself. She’s 7, I’m 33…we are a work in progress!
In the summer of 2007, my husband and our girls bought airline tickets to Costa Rica. We were going on our first surfing trip!
The month before we were scheduled to leave, I went in for my yearly check-up, only to discover that at 41 years old, I had Breast Cancer. Obviously, the trip was postponed.
This July, two years later, after multiple surgeries and months of chemotherapy, we are going surfing!
My goal during this journey was to demonstrate strength and perseverance to our girls. Wouldn’t this surfboard be a testament…ride every wave and never give up!
I saw The Title 9 Surfboard and THE DREAM began. Envisioning myself in a matching bikini (covered by a 5mm wetsuit) and of course my matching eyes fighting my way through the powerful mesmerizing white and green surf of the beautiful Oregon Coast, my arms screaming from the effort. Waiting for the perfect wave to fully enjoy my new unique surfboard. The reward the perfect wave roles in, I am jumping up surfing like a goddess back to the beach……… some dreams come true some don’t by winning the board I would come closer to my dream!
