My dream is to catch a wave with my dog. I’d like to fulfill a promise I made to my little lab and take her to the beach. Tawney, who I acquired in a roundabout way 9 years ago has taught me about the wonderful world of animals and how they can help people. I am now a supporter and volunteer for various animal organizations. If I win the surfboard Tawney and I will proudly take it to the beach and use it to raise awareness and educate people about treating animals kindly and adopting from shelters.
How can you live in Hawai’i and not know how to surf? This voice has spoken to me since I was 12. Two years ago I met my ocean-loving boyfriend and asked him for surf lessons. Just last week, I experienced the glorious thrill of riding a wave for 5 exhilarating seconds. It’s never too late to teach a 37 year-old new tricks. To think of all those waves I could’ve been catching these past 25 years. I will give this board to a young girl whose life will be enriched by the simple pleasures of the ocean.
Aloha…thank you for this amazing opportunity to spread the love for the sport of surfing. This beautiful one of a kind board by Carve Designs and shaped by Entropy, makes me smile so brightly just looking at it. I can only imagine how that smile would grow exponentially if I were to be gifted this piece of art, and found myself paddling out my supa fly new board! The blue on the board matches my eyes ;-*)
I am a nurse, and a photographer, and I’ve worked with troubled teens for the past 8 years. Part of our non profit program involves getting the inner city teens involved in sports and activities that they would not otherwise be exposed to. Since my board was recently stolen (it was a very sad day!), I have been scratching my head trying to figure out how to get a new one, so that I can continue the path with these kids, and get them standing up and surfing. This board would not only mean the world to me, but it would mean expanding worlds for these courageous teens. You would be making many people happy with this one board. Please & Thank You. Much Love….Tracy
Ode to the Board from an Aspiring Surfista
Salt water circling under me
up to my feet
energy is pulling me.
Power, pride magnified
by sun’s rays beaming
on, from, through, every side.
My first time up, not on sand,
another goal reached
the feeling so grand.
Seeking balance my aspiration,
family, vocation, health,
evolving me, my motivation.
Children growing, my model they see,
work hard, play hard,
live passionately.
Fear not a challenge to elevate me,
rigor, body, mind, spirit,
confound mediocrity.
So lift me up, oh Title Nine,
on an eco friendly catalyst,
a ride so fine!
The Summer I Stood Up On My Board
I started standing up on my rental board last summer. This is the story of that empowerment. I spent four years as a street kid, and during that time, perfected the art of invisibility. Keeping my head down. Keeping below the radar. Although I gradually, through the years, put myself through college and (now) through grad school, I always worked in sandwich shops and restaurants. Expendable jobs well below the radar. I lived in tiny cabins, tents, and places away from people. In the safety of nature where I could feel safe and breathe a bit. But gradually, over the years, I was shifting, changing. I learned Tai Chi from a friend in the woods, and took up meditation. I bought a used kayak and a pair of cross-country skis and began to feel stronger and happier as I explored the water ways and back country. And then, a few years ago, my Tai Chi friend introduced me to surfing. I never would have tried it- as it is so obviously “above the radar”- if she hadn’t described it in Tai Chi terms. Getting to know the element of water, the physics of a breaking wave, the lines of pelicans sweeping low over your head, the brush of seaweed against your legs and spin of fish around your board. She said women have an affinity for water, for surfing. Instead of conquering a wave, we watch it, learn from it, become one with it. And she’s right. I took to water like a harbor seal. And then last summer, I finally popped up on my board. It was also the summer I learned to swing dance and fell in love, the summer I took a “real” job and found I enjoyed the responsibility. I’m not sure which came first, standing up on my board or standing up in life. It seemed to happen at the same time. Somehow I was ready to stand up and live above the radar. Its made me wonder about other female surfers out there, about their story of standing up on their boards. Maybe one had her first kiss that summer, painted her room purple, and learned to play the guitar. Maybe another had the courage to get out of a bad relationship and go back to school. I’d like to interview them- girls, women, all ages- and make a little book out of it. And I think its time to stand up on my own board now, instead of renting gear from someone else. Let’s all stand up on our own boards.
I’m “Surfless in Seattle”! My Dad wanted to be his own boss and found a small marina in Florida. He sold everything, bought it and Mom picked us up after school to help wash boats and paint docks. On “days off” we were at the beach. My brothers took up surfing, so I grabbed a board and was hooked!
My sister developed breast cancer so I moved here. She laughs that I brought my old dinged-up board! I still paddle out when I go home and will surf until I drop! I love the Carve-Entropy surfboard – my favorite colors!
As I approach my seventh decade, I would be in seventh heaven if I could continue teaching my kids how to live by learning how to catch a 7-foot wave on my 7-foot board. Oh, what luck to be a gnarly septuagenarian!
I am a stay at home mom with a 4 year old, 3 year old and 10 month old and I feel like I am finally in a place to get back to doing something for myself. Just the other day I was thinking “Gosh, I’d really like to learn to surf” and then I bumped into this contest. I probably don’t deserve this surfboard, but I would really like it.
I would place the surfboard ontop my patio deck wood rail (overlooking our pool) with
a beach umbrella to match.
Coconut face heads would be dangling from the umbrella posts, while
sipping a tropical cooler with my husband of 31 years, and listening
to Jimmy Buffets tunes….etc…
Also, we live within 3 miles of the beach, and look forward to watching the surfers.
I could see it now!
maddy dear maddy
used to shred really baddy
at the shore, she used to shred every summer
college came in a landlocked state
surf no more… oh what a bummer
marriage, job and baby came with less time for the beach
oh how a new surfboard would put that back in reach
maddy is really missing her teenage surf dream
a new board in time for her 40th birthday would make it all peaches and cream
