Interesting thought Amy - good questions. I can only respond really to my own personal reaction to such questions and not for any one else. So with that said, it seems I would not have questioned the number of hours of sleep if Zaida were the working man...but I would think Zaida was a work-a-holic of sorts and being a Counselor I know all to well that something...in the form of relationships most likely...falls off the plate or gets less nourishment than it truly needs. May sound strong...but I believe I would make that observation whether male or female. Finding that balance is tough...and perhaps this taps into values here and I certainly am exposing mine...relationship with those in my 'inner circle' are far more important to me than my career, exercise, 'being' outdoorsy, or sports...but perhaps that is just my values speaking. Of course, I say this with full admission I struggle in this balance and choice of what is more important in life daily. So, my observation is of myself as it is of anyone else : ) !

My 2 cents. "To each their own." Zaida has created a life that makes her happy and obviously it works for her. Yup, its on less than the avg. amount of sleep, so be it, everyone is wired different. She skips a "normal" lunch occasionally for a workout and a quick snack replacement. Is that worse that a high calorie lunch out and no work-out? Really? I assume her other 2 meals are more substantial and make up for it. Come on we all skip meals, we all over indulge. It all balances right. I don't think skipping a full meal here or there is such a bad thing.

Tina : )
a "healthy" 180 lb. 5'9" and proud of it. Proud of every lb. of muscle I've worked, burned and sweated for, every lb. of fat I've eaten and enjoyed. Up or down a few lbs I'm still happy and okay with me and proud to share it.

I hear you, Jessica. And I appreciate your inclination to question our societal values regarding work/home balance. It's an important issue that is all too easy to overlook.

In that same spirit of reflection, here's an interesting point to ponder. Zaida's husband stays home and takes care of their kids while Zaida works to support their family. If Zaida were a working man with a stay-at-home wife, would we be questioning the hours she keeps or the example she's setting for her children? Might we be holding women to a higher standard here?

Just some food for thought.

As always, thanks for sharing.

It is awesome that Zaida can fit so much into her day, and in general I'm sure this series is simply about encouraging fitness.... However, I have a real problem with our society which seems to think the busier you are, the better. It seems we applaud people who are super busy and juggling motherhood, working, exercise, fun, and wow, it's even better if they are falling into bed exhausted beyond belief at midnight. Trust me, I'm doing it, and it's too much. I just think our values are really in the wrong place. I agree with what Adrienne wrote....

You GO! I want to applaud her husband for being there for her too, without him she would never be able to keep that schedule. For those of us single moms, her life is an impossibility. I am sure the other model area of her life is a healthy relationship with her spouse.

Wow! I am simply amazed by how much Zaida can fit into her day. I'm a physical therapist, and totally believe in staying fit. I don't have any children yet, so I have all the time in the world for my fitness pursuits. I head to the gym for at least an hour and a half four days a week. I often wonder what I'll do when I have children. It's inspiring to know there's someone out there who actually manages to pull it off. I don't think it's easy, but then it's not impossible either! Way to go, Zaida!

Zaida is a soccer-playing friend of mine. She is driven and determined and works very hard. She also has a lot of fun! Weekends you'll find her playing with her kids in their yard, having friends and family over, and generally relaxing. Our soccer team has a couple of weekends away each year and part of the fun is getting Zaida to laugh so hard that she cries. Her schedule may seem overwhelming to some (it does to me!), but she manages it with grace and a great attitude.

Honestly, Zaida's story seems crazy to me. What she's teaching her kids is that it's okay to go all day and not have any spontaneous, unscheduled time where life simply happens. We could all pack more into our days. The trick is to see what we can let go of so we can simply "be" once in a while.

To answer the question however- I do play a team sport, soccer, and each time I step on the field with my team nothing else matters. It's amazing how for 90 minutes I am completley focused on the game and not what I have to do tomorrow, what happened today, how I look or the state of the world. It is just about my team, the ball and the goal. I recently took about 3 months off and am starting up again next week. I wont be making that mistake again! Playing gives me a boost of confidance, it's a workout where you don't think about calories or fat burned just playing.

I think Zaida's story is pretty amazing, how much of us honestly work more then we should? Sleep less then we would like and give everything to those we love around us? It's nice to see a true story, not a storybook fairytale.
I work 20+ hours a week, attend school full time in a demanding program, try to keep the house clean, spend time with my fiance and family and I spent half of last year also training for my first half Ironman. Yeah I slept less, I didn't always eat a perfectly balanced meal and there were days that were hard. However, I did it and am training this year for a marathon. Maybe later I'll take a break and yes I try to be healthy but I am doing what I love and enjoying myself, nobody but myself forces me to do these things.
So thank you for a story that shows life is not one size fits all!
