40 Years of Title IX

Day 2: What’s your new comfort zone?

We all know it’s easy to sidle up to what’s easy, but what have you done lately to push yourself to the next level?   Have you been running two miles instead of one?  Are you biking the whole trail instead of half?  Can you hold that headstand without the wall behind ya?  Whatever it is, we want to know about your new comfort zone. How are you challenging yourself to be your best self?

Title Nine - 40 Years
40 years ago Congress signed landmark legislation, Title IX, attacking the gender divide in sports. Today that divide has been virtually erased. In 1972, only 30,000 girls participated in high school sports. Today it’s over 3,000,000!! Because many of us here at Title Nine, including our founder, were there in the early years, we think there’s a lot to celebrate this year.

We’re excited to announce our t-shirt design contest winners! If you’ll remember, next year is the 40th Anniversary of Title IX, (the federal legislation that brought girls off the sidelines and onto the playing fields all across America). To celebrate this milestone, we have a few plans in the making; one of them being some limited edition tees (that celebrate the Power of 9). So, to kick things off, we had y’all submit your tee shirt designs. Thanks to all who submitted an entry!

Wow, was it a tough decision…we have some pretty talented folks out there! After deliberating, we selected these 3 designs as winners. Heidi, Colette and Abby will receive $100 T9 gift cards.

Yes she did

“When she bounded onto the stage in her sleeveless dresses, with her muscular post-Title IX arms in full view, the definition of a strong woman changed”.

– MSN.com

But no, Michelle Obama did not change the definition of a strong woman. She just revealed something that has been going on, hidden in plain sight, for a long, long time. A whole generation of us, we post Title IX women, have been making our mark on the world by the choices we make and the compromises that we have refused to make. We are fit and powerful, buoyed by the strength we found on the fields and courts of our girlhoods.

She does all of us post-Title IXer’s proud, But Michelle Obama is not singular, just the most visible of a whole generation of fit, powerful, post Title IX women. When we celebrate her, we are in fact, celebrating our own strength, our own true selves. And, …

We’ve only just begun.
