Break with Tradition

By Staff • May 9th, 2009 • Category: Move It

It’s that special day which comes only once a year. How are you celebrating your momma? Now we don’t wanna hear about any brunch – so you got any new traditions? A few years ago we started one ourselves with our Annual Mother’s Day Title Nine 9k in Boulder, Co. We realize not everyone can make it (and we’ll miss you). But you can still share the way you t9-ify Mother’s Day below. Make sure to check out a few pics of us with our Momma’s.  Aaahhhhh, Memories!

One year we had a special picnic at our house for our female friends whose
mothers had passed away or who no longer talked to their moms!!!!!
(Seriously!) One girl who still had a mother brought her to our party and
we treated her like a “Queen for the Day!”

I did this because I did “Mom-care” until my mother passed away at the
age of 95, and the idea of a mom-less Mother’s Day the year after she
    died was unthinkable.

This year we did the old buffet routine, and I must say, I believe I’ll go back to our
    picnic next year!

    Sincerely,
    Marcia K. de la Cerda
(Who did not “become” a mother until she was married at the age of 54
    to a widower!)

My mother has passed away. My friend Linda’s favorite tradition, though, is to do the 5K Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure walk in Minneapolis, MN on Mother’s Day every year with her family because her mother is a breast cancer survivor. They have been doing this for at least ten years.

For the past twelve years my husband, myself, and two sons have gone to the Maumee Bay Resort in Northern Ohio and spend the weekend bird watching and enjoying the resort. The nearby Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is open every year on May 9 for the International Migratory Bird Day, to the public. You can drive through and witness the wildlife up close.
My sons are 16 and 19 now, and they still enjoyed going together this year. I will cherish these memories forever.

For the past 5 years my oldest son and I started running in The Susan G Komen Race for the Cure, in Philadelphia PA. Two years ago, my youngest son joined us. We plan on continuing this tradition for as long as we can! (My Bra that I purchased from Title 9, kept the tatas in place!!!!!! I recommend the Maia bra to everyone.

For the last 4 years I have spent Mother’s Day participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure which is held annually on Mother’s Day in Philadelphia where I live. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and have run the race every year since, in honor of my mother who is also a survivor, and to celebrate my own recovery from breast cancer and cancer treatments. Following cancer treatments I joined a dragon boat team for breast cancer survivors, Hope Afloat. Our whole team participates in the Mother’s Day 5K run so it’s also a way to share Mother’s Day with my teammates… there’s nothing better!

This is probably a crazy one, but for Mothers Day I meet my sister at the cemetery to visit our Mom. We weed and fertilize her grave site and have a beer with her. Before we leave, we pour 1 beer into the ground for her then we walk, run or jog the 2.5 miles home. Because drinking and jogging can be somewhat challenging, we share a beer between the two of us.

My mom died 9 years ago when I was in my early 30’s. Just when I started to really enjoy and understand her for the unique woman she was. Cheers Mom!
