I'm 47 with 3 kids, 2 grandkids. I get SUCH a rush when one of my girls or their girlfriends say "Mom, you're buff!" Twenty years ago when I was a full-time working single mother of 2 year old twin girls and a 1 year old boy, I knew I had to so SOMETHING for myself to stay sane. I was incredibly fortunate that two terrific young men had just started a karate club in my town. Karate helped me to focus, get toned, develop self-confidence, recover from a bad marriage, etc. It made me stronger mentally and physically. Now I am a third degree black belt, one daughter is a second degree, the other daughter and son are both first degree black belts. My 2 year old grandson is a nearly fearless, climbing, jumping whirlwind of activity. I credit it all to that day 20 years ago when I decided not to be shackled to a weak past, but to build a strong future for myself and for my kids.

I just cut this quote out of the most recent T9 and posted it on my fridge. I am a 37 yr old mom of three kids age 4 and under, just ran my first 1/2 marathon (with my oh so supportive husband) and when my kids ask, "mom, why are you running?" I tell them "I run to keep my pipes strong and my body healthy." I would be lying if I said that I eagerly jump out of bed at 5:30 to run but my hope is that my three kids will grow up seeing that fitness is just a part of a healthy life and that they will incorporate it into their lives. I hope that when my children are 16 they will see me, like Allison's daughter sees her... a fit mom. Way to go and thanks for the inspiration to keep on running!

Wow, 30 years of ultimate, way to go! Great sport but my knees could only take 3 years of it. Mountain biking for myself and hiking with our kids keeps me fit for everything now.

Fitness through the decades is how to stay fit for everything.
Thanks, Missy, for putting a disc on the cover and incorporating cleats in your comments. My fitness formula is putting on cleats to play ultimate for 30+ years...and, of course, balancing land sports with fins and bare feet for the water. thanks

I used to exercise for me, now I realize that working out is something I do for my kids too. To keep up with them, be strong for them, enjoy life with them, be there for them many years in the future. I used to think working out was selfish "me" time, but now I know it really isn't.

How true. My 16-yr-old daughter declared me "the most fit" of her friends' moms, which I took to be a huge compliment, especially as I'm adjusting to a softer, heftier post-menopause body than I carried for my first 50 years. YES, I AM fit--or trying to be, and glad it's part of my identity.

I couldn't agree more. My workouts are the easy part- the rest of the day involves juggling multiple things at a time- such as cooking, child rearing, dishes, dancing with children, being creative with children, writing, and reading blog entries!
