What I Learned at Harvard Business School

Last spring I took a 3-week crash course in business at Harvard.

  • I learned that if I had gone to business school, I probably never would have gone into business.
  • I learned a few tricks, a new way to look at the numbers.
  • I came away with newfound appreciation for the skills of a really gifted professor.

But mostly I learned that business for profit is hard work, but BUSINESS WITH A PURPOSE CAN BE TRANSFORMATIVE.

Where are you your own best self?

At home? In the gym? In the mountains? With family? With a certain friend? In a certain place? At a certain time?

For me, I am most fully myself when I am competing with a team on a field or a court, all working together towards a common goal. Next best is working and playing here at Title Nine amongst a group of like-minded individuals, friends really. Working to move T9 forward and sharing a love of sport and fitness.

Here’s to finding that place where we are our best selves and spending more time there. Where is that place for you? Share it with us below.

STRENGTH

For me, strength starts with my body, and as my body grows stronger and more competent, it fuels a strength in my spirit. It fuels the strength to

Say no and mean it.

Say yes and mean it.

Take a risk and fail.

Take a risk and succeed.

It fuels the strength to quit.

And, begin again.

Food as Fad

Atkins diet, Grapefruit Diet, Lo-Carb, No-Carb, Ice Cream Diet, Donut Diet. It’s enough to make ya crazy. Even such seemingly reasonable claims as organic, all-natural, and local can get elevated to cult status. How to make sense of it all?? There’s no money to be made in it, but the truth of the matter is the best “diet” of all is one that’s heavy on common sense and light on wishful thinking. A couple of my rules of the eating road: If I can’t pronounce it, I probably shouldn’t eat it. Avoid oxymoronic food: fat-free french fries, sugar-free cookies. When all else fails, I try to embrace moderation…just one donut. Got food tips of your own? Share em with us!

We have nothing to fear but fear itself.

fear_post1These days, I find that I have nothing to fear but the 24/7 barrage of “news.”  Or more accurately, the tales of fear, swine flu, bird flu, killer bees, kidnappers, mass murderers that masquerade as news.  But the fact is that we’ve never in the history of humans been safer or healthier than we are right now.  Yet “the news” constantly tries to convince us otherwise.  For me the fix has been magically simple: tune out and turn off all that “news.”

All of a sudden I feel a lot safer.  I figure if something really newsworthy happens, it’ll find me.  In the meantime I can try to focus on the things I can control like eating and sleeping well, buckling up myself and my kids, getting some exercise and connecting with friends and family.

I feel better just thinking about it.
